Rezumat

Deeply affected by the territorial annexations suffered by his country and by the brutalities and deportations to which Romanians were subjected in the areas annexed in 1940, Gheorghe I. Brătianu wrote a series of works during the World War years, translated into the most widely spoken languages, in which he denounced the injustices suffered, trying to inspire courage in his countrymen by evoking the difficult moments that their ancestors had overcome over the centuries through will and tenacity. Starting from the idea that „nothing is lost, as long as we keep, unbending and unwavering, the awareness of the eternal bond between this nation and its land”, in the course of only a few years, Gheorghe I. Brătianu published works of great value in various international languages, pleading before Romanian and international public opinion for Romania’s historical rights over the territories that had been taken away, revealing the fragility of the „arguments” of the ideologues of irredentism. These include „La Moldovie et ses frontières historiques” (1940), „La Bessarabie. Droits nationaux et historiques” (1943) and „Origines et formation de l’unité roumaine” (1943), works that occupy a special place in terms of the relevance of the arguments put forward, and are the subject of our present study.
