Rezumat

The study is dedicated to analysis of satellite images in order to identify and plan the measures for renaturation of rivers and streams from the Camenca river basin. Rivers hydromorhological alteration is caused by construction of dams and reservoirs on river streams, of a large number of canals, including Balatina-Prut, flood protection dykes in the floodplain as well as rivers training, especially in the lower part. Main measures to be taken for improvement of rivers hydromorphological conditions from the Camenca river basin are divided into those related to longitudinal continuity as well as of floodplain conditions. According to satellite images, 378 dams are constructed on river streams (with length over 2,5 km). 51 of them are partially demolished and can be the first in the list of river renaturation measures. The upstream part of the dams is reservoir or pond only in case of 58%, other conditions are: 24% - dry land, 8% - wetlands, 6% - eutrophic water accumulations, 4% - semidry ponds. One of the most important measures is restoration of hydrological link between the middle and lower part of the Camenca river by demolishing the canal Balatina-Prut. Another important measure refers to restoration of natural shape of Camenca river. The natural riverbed is well visualized on free satellite images and can be mapped and subsequently identified in the field for restoration. In this regard, it was calculated that the trained river length is about 17 km, while mapped natural river is 27 km. Thus, the real length of Camenca was reduced by at least 10 km. An important measure refers to the establishment of river protection zones and the planting of protection strips with certain trees. Modelled protection zones area is about 6425 ha, of which 2700 ha is specific for Camenca river itself, 2500 ha for small rivers (length of 10-100 km), and 1227 ha for streams (length of 2,5-10 km). Also, is was identified that main land cover from modelled protection zones is grassland – 71%, followed by arable lands – 8%, settlements – 7%, forests – 6%, wetlands – 6%. The protection of rivers and the restoration of their beds is the basic strategy for improving the state of the environment and the sustainable use of its resources.
