The author draws attention to a number of important unresolved problems (including those recognized by leading supporters) of the currently dominant variant of the Scandinavian etymology behind of the ethnonym Rus’/русь, He argues a new version of the East Germanic etymology of this ethnonym. Following the explanatory model of “Finno-Germanic militarized groups”, the author believes that for the Roman period we should also assume the existence of such groups (in particular, on Saaremaa, Lanemaa and Virumaa), controlling the sea route along the southern coast of the Baltic — but with the East Germans as the dominant element. East Germanic *rauþs ‘red’ is proposed as the original etymon for русь. Taking into account the phonetic processes characteristic of the East Germanic languages (early contraction of the original Germanic diphthongs and the tendency to increase vowels), a natural stage of evolution of *rauþs ‘red’ should be the form *rōþs. Considering ethnonymic models of the Finnish peoples (and Goths), we should justifiably obtain the form *rōþ (but with the meaning ‘red’) as the original etymon for the Slavic русь.

Autorul atrage atenţie asupra unui șir de probleme importante nerezolvate (inclusiv recunoscute de părtașii cu renume) privind varianta scandinavă a etimologiei etnonimului русь, dominantă actual, și argumentează o nouă variantă est-germanică a etimologiei acestui etnonim. Urmând modelul explicativ al „grupurilor militarizate fino-germane”, autorul consideră că și pentru perioada romană trebuie să presupunem existenţa unor astfel de grupuri (în particular — pe Saaremaa, în Lanemaa și Virumaa), care controlează calea maritimă în lungul ţărmului de sud al Balticii — dar cu germanicii de răsărit în calitate de element dominant. În calitate de etnonim original este propus est-germanicul *rauþs ‘roșu’. Luând în considerare procesele fonetice caracteristice pentru limbile est-germanice (contracţia timpurie a diftongilor pur germanici și tendinţa spre ridicare a vocalelor), etapă legitimă de evoluţie a *rauþs ‘roșu’ trebuia să fie forma *rōþs. Însă apelând la modelele etnonime caracteristice pentru popoarele baltic-fine (precum și pentru goţi), permite, în opinia autorului, să obţinem în mod justificat forma *rōþ (dar cu semnificaţia ‘roșii’) în calitate de etnonim original pentru slavul русь.

Автор обращает внимание на ряд важных нерешенных проблем (в том числе — признаваемых ведущими сторонниками) доминирующего сегодня варианта скандинавской этимологии этнонима русь и аргументирует новый вариант восточногерманской этимологии этого этнонима. Следуя объяснительной модели «финно-германских милитаризованных групп», автор считает, что и для римского времени мы должны предполагать существование подобных групп (в частности — на Сааремаа, в Лянемаа и Вирумаа), контролирующих морской путь вдоль южного побережья Балтики — но с восточными германцами в качестве доминирующего элемента. В качестве исходного этимона предлагается восточногерманское *rauþs ‘красный'. С учетом характерных для восточногерманских языков фонетических процессов (раннего стяжения исконных германских дифтонгов и тенденции к повышению гласных), закономерным этапом эволюции *rauþs ‘красный' должна была стать форма *rōþs. Обращение же к этнонимическим моделям, характерным для прибалтийско-финских народов (а также готов), позволяет, по мнению автора, оправданно получить форму *rōþ (но со значением ‘красные') в качестве исходного этимона для славянского русь.
