In the last 30 years Russia has constantly used Transnistria as a lever of influence towards the Republic of Moldova. From a military perspective, the conflict was frozen indeed, but from a communicational point of view, Moscow often appealed the unfreezing of the conflict in order to maintain its geopolitical grip on Chisinau. This study aims to analyze two apparently different Russian perspectives on the Transnistrian conflict, after Maia Sandu’s victory in the presidential elections of 2020. Firstly, I look into how the Russian press – Rossiyskaya Gazeta, and especially Nezavisimaya Gazeta – portray the status of the Transnistrian conflict and Chisinau-Tiraspol relations. Secondly, I analyze a Transnistrian propaganda movie, in order to shed light on Tiraspol’s self-perception and its goals in relation to Chisinau. For both endeavors, I identify three core-themes and interpret them in order to understand better Moscow’s/ Tiraspol’s intentions and objectives. In the context of the Ukrainian war (second phase, started on February, 24, 2022), anticipating Russia’s steps could be of utmost importance for Chisinau and its future relations with Moscow and Tiraspol.
