Rezumat

Introduction: Epithelial ovarian tumors (EOT) account for about 15% of pediatric ovarian masses. The histological subtypes of EOT in children include only serous and mucinous tumors. We reviewed a 14 years experience of ovarian masses to underline the spectrum of pathology and presentation of children with epithelial lesions. Aim: to evaluate pediatric patients (d” 18 y) diagnosed with EOTs over a period of thirteen years with regard to their general characteristics and treatment methods. Materials & Methods: A total of thirty one patients with diagnose of EOT were evaluated. Results: The mean age of patients was 15.7±0.4 years, ranging between 9 and 18 years. The most common complaint was abdominal pain in 29/31 (93.5%) patients. Diagnosis of EOTs was based on USG, CT scan and MRI findings: lesions located in the right ovary (n=13), left ovary (n=16), and bilaterally (n=2). The mean diameter of EOTs at diagnosis was: max. – 11.64±1.25cm (95% CI: 9.07-14.2) and min. – 10.6±1.11cm (95% CI: 7.78-12.37). Laparotomy was performed in 20 patients (64.5%) and laparoscopy – in 11 (35.5%). Surgical procedures were: cystectomy (n=21, 67.7%), salpingo-oophorectomy (n=7, 22.58%), oophorectomy (n=2, 6.45%) and subtotal hysterectomy with bilateral adnexectomy (n=1, 3.22%). Two appendectomies were performed. The hystopathological report revealed: serous cyst (n=17), mucinous cyst (n=12) and papillary projections (n=2). There were no operative or postoperative complications.
