Thus far, most research on childhood stress tends to focus on major or traumatic events as the source of childhood stress. Adults too often seem oblivious to the stress and pressures that mount in the daily lives of their children, particularly the everyday, recurring or ongoing stress that is usually of minor severity. As a result, these everyday stresses are more likely to continue until significant or irreversible damage is done. Too much focus has been placed on the catastrophic and not enough on the mundane sources of stress in a child's life, which are more common and affect more children. Therefore, more discussion should be directed to the more familiar, though less conspicuous, forms of stress encountered in many of the children in modern society. Sources of stress in childhood include school, interpersonal relationships, society, poverty, chronic illness, and medical procedures and hospitalization. |
