Background. Carnosine is a naturally occurring dipeptide made up of β-alanine and L-histidine found primarily in muscle and brain tissue, that is a new potential alternative treatment that aims to prevent the progression of kidney-related complications in diabetes. Objective of the study. To study the biochemical mechanisms of action of carnosine and to evaluate the possible benefits of carnosine therapy in order to prevent complications and to develop an effective treatment in diabetic nephropaty. Material and Methods. To achieve the proposed goal, a synthesis of the literature published from 2009 to 2021 has been made, using 10 bibliographic sources, including electronic libraries like PubMed, Medscape, Hinari. Results. In pre-clinical testing on rodents, exogenously administrated carnosine had the following positive effects on renal function and morphology: reduced albuminuria, reduced albumin/creatinine ratio, restrained glomerular hypertrophy, podocyte number was preserved and the thickening of the basement membrane attenuated. The renoprotective effects of carnosine are due to its strong antiglycating properties. It reactes with glycated proteins and reduce the rate of formation of advanced glycation end products (AGE), e.g CML - carboxymethyl lysine and CEL - carboxyethyl lysine in plasma and liver. Conclusion. Carnosine is a promising therapeutic option because of its action in preventing the formation of AGE, the main incriminated compounds in all diabetic complications. Further in-depth studies are necessary to find out the main mechanisms of carnosine influence. |
