One of the prerogatives of the conceptual metaphor theory is that the most central metaphors are grounded in bodily experience. This is the reason why it might be expected that these metaphors would be shared by different languages. The purpose of this paper is to examine the power of conceptual metaphor theory to explain the non-literal senses of language from the field of the human body. There has been found a number of equivalent expressions across the two languages which seem to be traceable to the body-mind mappings described by Sweetser, Kövecses, and others. Metonymy is also a significant force for generating non-literal expressions, but the large number of expressions is apparently generated by a combination of metaphor and metonymy. This cross-linguistic study commends that universally bodily experience motivates many figurative expressions in different languages, for cultural and linguistic reasons.
