Rezumat

Adequate seed germination and seedling growth are the most important factors for subsequent successful plant growth and development. Different techniques are proposed to improve seed germination rate and early sidling growth of corn. The objective of this study was to find the influence of seed treatment with Hoagland’s nutrient solution on seed germination and seedling growth of different corn hybrids. The seeds of the corn hybrids: Porumbeni 180, Porumbeni 374, Porumbeni 383, Porumbeni 427 and Bemo203, as well as the Hoagland’s nutrient solution as source of nutrients were used in the study. Prior to germination, seeds were soaked in distilled water (control) or ½ Hoagland’s nutrient solution for 24 hours, and subsequently placed for germination at air humidity of 70-80%, in the dark, at a temperature of 26°C. Germination speed, shoot and root lengths of the seedlings were recorded. The results revealed that seed pretreatment with½ Hoagland’s nutrient solution significantly increased final germination percentage, germination rate and seedling growth (length and fresh weight of roots and shoots) in maize hybrids, compared to control. But, the values of these indices for the studied hybrids were different. Pre treatment of maize seeds with ½ Hoagland’ nutrient solution can be suitable for increasing germination rate and supporting early growth of maize seedlings.
