Tag questions are unanimously considered to be an indispensable device in conversation that serves several goals. Though they make part of the system of questions, due to their underlying peculiarities, they stand apart from other kinds of questions. Their structure is intricate. There is a unique variation in the set of grammatical features that contribute to their interpretation. The first constituent in the tag question is not interrogative in form, as it happens when we deal with some other kinds of questions, but it is affirmative/negative. Another thing that makes these questions distinct is the functions that they perform in communication. Thus they can be treated pragmatically as requests, instructions, orders, invitations, commands, expression of surprise, hatred, suspicion, irony, disapproval etc. |
