In one of his emblematic studies, the remarkable Swiss scientist and philosopher, Ferdinand Gonseth (1890-1975), tried an answer to the difficult and controversy issue of the legitimacy of the religious faith in the contemporaneity. His study Science, philosophie et foi [Science, philosophy and faith], dedicated to this subject, represents a powerful and convincing pillar of the „opened to experience” philosophical vision, which contours a rationalist-comprehensive, and optimistic-lucid option to the issue afore exposed. Analysing the mediatic reactions caused by the beginnings of cosmic space exploring (e.g. the Apollo 15 Moon expedition), Gonseth wants to overcome the pessimism of disappointment in front of the revelation that there is no life outside Planet Earth. To the perspective of the end of the hope of searching some alter egos in the Universe, he opposes the defence of faith legitimacy in respect to what transcends us and enriches us with a still open, unknown destination. To abandoning all faith and hope is opposing the conviction that there is no justification for the down-valorisation of what makes the knowledge possible or effective/valid, in the name of what is known up to a point (present time). The problematics researched by Gonseth in his work is not exclusively theoretical and philosophical, but also methodological, psycho-pedagogical and cultural-anthropological, in the context of the extreme relativization of the intellectual, moral, educational etc. values by the media and the public opinion. In fact, that what criticises the Swiss thinker in his approach is exactly the image simplified to the extreme and exaggeratedly emotional of the perspective of the Man in the Universe, cultivated by the supports of mass information means. Our present study is directed towards the development of Gonseth point of view concerning the legitimacy of faith and its actual placement from the comparative perspective of the moral-religious education in the European culture. |
