Background. Bipolar affective disorder is a mental illness characterized by episodic and lasting mental impairment of the personality. This disease is often associated with a higher rate of psychiatric comorbidity and psychosocial vulnerability. Objective of the study. Analysis and synthesis of contemporary scientific data in the field for the recognition and evaluation of evolving psychiatric and non-psychiatric comorbidities and their impact on the severity of bipolar disorder and psychosocial functioning. Material and Methods. The paper aims to review, analyze and synthesize specialized materials, epidemiological data, scientific studies and literature review, which designate the information needed to assess psychiatric and non-psychiatric comorbidities in bipolar disorder. Results: As the result of the structural analysis of the studied data, it was found that bipolar affective disorder is associated with a number of psychiatric and non-psychiatric pathologies. The most common psychiatric nosological units are anxiety disorders, alcohol abuse and addiction to psychoactive substances. In the non-psychiatric field, endocrine and dysmetabolic pathologies (diabetes, obesity, thyroid diseases) have a high frequency of occurrence. The above-mentioned nosological entities have a significant impact for the increased psychosocial vulnerability of people affected by bipolar disorder. Conclusion. The presence of medical comorbidities positively correlates with an unfavorable evolution of bipolar disorder. Proper treatment aimed to remove comorbidities and the application of interventions can contribute to improving the mental state and social functioning of patients suffering from BAD. |
