Rezumat

The oil painting on canvas „Veterans of Vaslui” of the painter Corneliu Vasilescu is an evocation of the heroism of the soldiers of the regiment of Vaslui who have reached their age of senescence. Painted in the year of the Centenary of the Independence War of Romania (year 1978), the painting shows in the foreground the legendary figure of the Vaslui-born, Sergent Major Constantin Țurcanu, known as the one who has transformed his nickname in a title – Peneș Curcanul – the sergent from the poem of Vasile Alecsandri. In his work of art „Veterans of Vaslui”, Corneliu Vasilescu solves compositional and chromatic problems by painting the faces of the veterans of Vaslui realisticaly reflexively. Despite of a bipolary nature of the Romanian painting in the ending of the ’70 decade meant to bypass the socialist censorship, Corneliu Vasilescu uses colour, shape and composition experiments influenced by different international trends and combines the customs of the modern painting, the result being an original and unique painting style.
