Objective: To evaluate the prevalence of metabolic syndrome (MS) and its components in two primary health care (PHC) centers. Patients and Methods: 1025 patients (288 (28.1%) males and 737 (71.9%) females) between 16 and 84 years of age (mean 48.91 ± 0.46 yrs) who visited family doctors in two PHC centers. All patients were evaluated according to standard protocol. Results: The following prevalences of MS components were observed: abdominal obesity – 71.7%; arterial hypertension (AH) – 48.5%, lipid metabolism abnormalities – 32.1%, impaired glucose metabolism – 13.3%. The prevalence of MS, according to the IDF definition, was 23.7%. A link with abdominal obesity was demonstrated in patients with; AH (χ2 = 118.59; p < 0.001), systolic isolated AH (χ2 = 72.13; p < 0.001), and high blood cholesterol (χ2 = 24.57; p < 0.001). A link between AH and glycaemia was observed in patients with abdominal obesity (χ2= 20.30; p < 0,001). The prevalence of MS was higher in hypertensive patients than in normotensive patients (χ2 = 169.94; p < 0,001). A positive family history for AH increased the probability of MS in probands (χ2= 14.49; p < 0.001). Microalbuminuria was more common in MS patients than those without MS (χ2= 6.61; p = 0.01). Conclusion: There is a high prevalence of MS in patients attending PHC institutions. Therefore, family physicians need to make a concerted effort to highlight high-risk patients and initiate preventative measures. |
