The concept of beauty is much discussable in modern society, being the subject of various investigations in the field of psychology, sociology, gender study and cosmetic/beauty industry, as well. Although beauty is about being comfortable in one’s own skin, it is also about knowing and accepting who a person is, i.e. outer beauty is inner beauty made visible (Paulo Coelho). However, the rules of the society, the power of cosmetics, and the effect they can have on one's happiness and confidence are very real. Therefore, the language of beauty industry creates an image of an intricate and mysterious system to which the uninitiated have but limited access. Those who have daily exposure to this fascinating system of communication are usually unaware that they have acquired a special language. The advancement of beauty industry knowledge has affected and illuminated history, literature, and translation. Being a beauty industry translator is much more than simply being bilingual, it is about being able to interpret and transcribe a message suitably, according to its purpose and target audience. The translators of beauty industry vocabulary frequently do not mention all the information stated in the source terms. They omit, change, and reformulate certain parts of the source to fit the target context. |
