Recent estimates by the International Organization for Migration (World Migration Report, 2020) indicated that in 2019, 272 million people (of whom 52% men and 48% women) lived in a country other than their country of origin, they representing about 3.5% of the Earth's population. Some of them are more vulnerable than others due to personal, social, situational and structural factors. However, their vulnerabilities may be exacerbated in crisis situations, as it is the case with the COVID-19 pandemic. Their ability to avoid the infection, receive adequate medical care and cope with the economic, social and psychological impacts of the pandemic is determined by a number of factors: living and working conditions, lack of consideration for their cultural and linguistic diversity in service provision, xenophobia, limited local knowledge and networks and their access to rights and level of inclusion in host communities, often related to their migration status (Liem et al., 2020). The paper presents a brief analysis of the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on the size and structure of migratory flows in Romania and the Republic of Moldova, as well as of the important elements that lead to the increase of migrants' vulnerabilities under the impact of COVID-19. Also, are analyzedimmigration issues, border closures and lockdowns imposed by various states as key elements that exacerbate existing challenges among migrants. The measures adopted in the host countries, but also in the countries of origin of migrants to prevent and mitigate the negative impacts of COVID-19 on this category of population are also analyzed. |
