Rezumat

The relationship between humans and the environment is complex and difficult to be managed, since all the components are interacting and influence one another on different spatial and time scales. Air quality represents, along with water and soil properties, a key part of the environmental status. In order to protect human health, the concentration and the evolution of atmospheric pollutants must be thoroughly monitored as related to the anthropogenic activities which generate them. Particulate matter, either PM10 or PM2.5, along with tropospheric ozone play an important negative role within air quality, since they are some of the most common pollutants present in urban agglomerations, spreading on large areas and affecting significantly our health on short timescale. This paper deals with the study of both the evolution of the concentration of tropospheric ozone and particulate matter over Europe, but also with the over-all air quality index distribution and status on our continent.
