First molecular conductors with cobalt bis(dicarbollide) anion were synthesized and investigated: (TMTSF)2[3,3’-Co(1,2-C2B9H11)2] (1) (Fig. 1a), (TTF)[3,3’-Co(1,2-C2B9H11)2] (2) and (ET)[3,3’-Co(1,2-C2B9H11)2] (3). Salt (1) is a semiconductor with activation energy Ea ≅ 0.03 eV, conductivity σ293 = 15 Ohm-1cm-1 (Fig. 1b), that is the maximum value of conductivity for metallacarborane radical cation salts [1-4] at room temperature.figureFig. 1. Crystal structure (a) and temperature dependence of resistance (b) for the single crystal of (TMTSF)2[3,3’-Co(1,2-C2B9H11)2].Unlike low-conducting (TTF)[3,3’-Co(1,2-C2B9H11)2], (ET)[3,3’-Co(1,2-C2B9H11)2] salts and similar (TTF)[3,3’-M(1,2-C2B9H11)2] (M = Fe, Ni [1]) salts having neither stacks nor layers and characterized by a cisoid conformation of [3,3’-Co(1,2-C2B9H11)2]- anion, (TMTSF)2[3,3’-Co(1,2C2B9H11)2] (1) salt has conducting stacks and characterized by anion in transoid conformation. |
