Teza

The study of the coordination compounds of trivalent lanthanide ions (Ln3+)
continues to be interesting from both a fundamental and applied point of view
in the field of photonic materials and devices, which may be attributed to the
luminescent properties of these compounds and their applications as optical
signal amplifiers, electroluminescent devices and luminescent probes in
biological systems.
In this communication we present the synthesis, a photoluminescence
and a magnetic susceptibility study of a series of complexes with the general
formula {[Ln2Sr(FRF)8(H2O)4]}n, where Ln = Pr3+, Nd3+, Sm3+, Gd3+, Tb3+,
Ho3+ and Yb3+, HFRF ≡ Furan-2-carboxylic acid. On the basis of X-ray
powder diffraction results it has been demonstrated that all the coordination
compounds under investigation are isostructural with earlier studied compounds
{[Ln2Sr(FRF)8(H2O)4]}n [1], where Ln = Er3+ and Eu3+. All the crystals are triclinic
and crystallize in the P1 _ space group.
The luminescence spectra of the microcrystalline compounds show the
characteristic emission bands due to 4f-4f transitions of the lanthanide ions. The
emission spectra and magnetic study results will be discussed on the basis of
the crystal structures proposed for the compounds.
