Author presents the results of a research aimed to investigate the
genetic mechanisms underlying the development and evolution
of asthma in children in Moldova. This approach clearly has the
potential to elucidate the diseases mechanisms. There had been in-
vestigated one of the asthma candidate genes (CC16 gene) thought
to be responsible for the secretion of the protein product of Clara
cells (Clara cell secretory gene), taking into account the expression
of its anti-inflammatory function and genetic location.
The study shows a high frequency of the CC16 A38G polymorphism
genotypes in the general population including functionally compro-
mised alleles, and in patient group was determined the association
of these genotypes with more complex and severe forms of asthma.
This study makes an important contribution to current knowledge
about the mechanisms of asthma and atopy.
The gene studied was selected because of its important role in regu-
lating inflammatory processes, but there it is necessary to conduct
further studies of extended range of genes related to asthma and
to examine both individual genetic polymorphisms and inherited
haplotype patterns.
