Rezumat

The present project approaches the problem of the wordplay in drama translation, which is categorized as untranslatable by translation theory. As the nature of the wordplay consists in the effect of ambiguity resulted from the use of polysemantic words planted into a specific context or out of their context, prompted by the support of non-verbal language; it is impossible to examine these complex phenomena without employing the instruments of discourse pragmatics – Politeness Principles, and politeness translation strategies. Linguistic theory is already equipped with a solid theoretical support – a classification of the wordplay translation techniques, we have also applied the pragmatics tool – the politeness translation strategies, so as to accomplish the task of analyzing the wordplay translation or non-translation in the context of a great historical drama.
