Rezumat

The present article is dedicated to the challenges of interpretation of negation in the English language. The English language is considered to be a structurally fixed one, but negatives in English are more difficult to interpret and may often cause ambiguity for language learners and users. The form and meaning of negatives in English are not as straightforward as what logicians make it seem. The scope of negation is a complex linguistic phenomenon, it is easy to perceive but hard to be defined from a syntactic point of view. Misunderstanding or ambiguity may occur when the negative scope is not understood clearly and correctly. Learning English grammar is a worthwhile endeavor, which implies continuous analysis and improvement of language skills. The aim of this article is to highlight the challenges that language learners face dealing with the phenomena of negation in the English language and their peculiar nature. Every language develops its own idiomatic sets of negative rules and the rules for using them. And the English language has its own rules of expressing negation, which can be systematically organized into the negation at the morphological and the syntactical levels. When we want to say that something is not true or is not the case, we can use negative words, phrases or clauses. Negation is more common in spoken than in written language because negative forms can be used in face-to-face interactions to make what we say less direct. Standard English does not have two negatives in the same clause. Words such as never, nobody, no one, none, nothing, nowhere, etc. already have a negative meaning, so we don’t need another negative with the verb. When we want to emphasize something negative we may use at all. Most Germanic languages including English proscribe against the use of double negatives. However, double negatives appear in both spoken and written English in all but the most formal registers. Language learners and users should be aware of the presence of double negatives as well as triple or more negatives in some forms of the English language and should be able to use the language with accuracy.
