Achille Chavée’s surreal poetry is mostly political (the poet participated in the Spanish war as well) and often very violent. The second vein is the humoristic one, a kind of humour that we qualify as surreal. In his poems, but especially in his aphorisms, Chavée practices the non-sense in all its variants: parody, irony, extravagant rewriting, play upon words, black humour (as Andre Breton sees it), absurd, twisting the proverbs and clichés, self-mocking, etc. This paper presents, analyses, comments upon and translates all these variants of non-sense in an attempt to promote this less known Belgian surrealist. |
