Rezumat

US diplomatic history includes a relatively short period (in the US Foreign Service in November 2010 celebrated 235 years). The first diplomats from the North American colonies, though lacking diplomatic experience and knowledge, successfully negotiated with far more experienced representatives of the diplomatic school already existing at that time in Europe. Diplomats from the North American colonies made a significant contribution to the cause of liberation and defence of the young republic in the international arena. In the situation of military weakness, situation that characterised the USA at that time, the diplomatic art represented an essential tool in the fight for international recognition of the country.
