Background. The etiopathogenesis of recurrent pterygium is not yet fully elucidated. Microsurgical techniques that are used for the treatment of recurrent pterygium do not always prevent the recurrence. Objective of the study. To present a clinical case of recurrent pterygium that was removed with microsurgical technique. Material and Methods. We present a case of a patient with recurrent pterigium. The ophthalmic investigation included visometry, biomicroscopy, and ophthalmoscopy. Results. A 53-year-old man, who worked as a miner underwent surgical excision of the pterygium (grade 3) in 2019. After 2 years, he presented to the hospital with grade 4 recurrent pterygium, and visual acuity in the left eye was counting fingers. A Mc Reynolds operation with amniotic membrane transplantation was performed and therapeutic contact lens was placed. After one month, the sutures (10-0) were removed; the uncorrected visual acuity was 0.4. After 2 months uncorrected visual acuity was 0.9, and after 1 year - 1.0. Conclusion. The Mc Reynolds procedure is a safe and effective method for the treatment of recurrent pterygium. Amniotic membrane transplantation and the use of therapeutic contact lens facilitate healing. |
