The article elucidates the work of the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) on biodiversity protection and sustainable development. In order to fulfill its mission, the IUCN brings together the efforts of several international, regional, governmental and non-governmental organizations interested in the environment, and works closely with the business sector. Among its main contributions are the development of ecosystem conventions, the Red List, the Red Book, which at national level lead governments to prepare national biodiversity policies. At the international level, it advises UNESCO on the world's natural heritage and monitors the protection of the world's natural heritage through the World Commission on Protected Areas. By organizing large-scale events such as the World Conservation Congress or the World Parks Congress, etc. IUCN members call on governments to include nature-based solutions in their strategies, and environmental education policies are influenced. The Republic of Moldova collaborates with the IUCN, but achievements in the field of alignment with European and international environmental standards are still modest. |
