Rezumat

During the interwar period, Bessarabian periodicals played an essential role in the national education of Bessarabian society and promotion of authentic artistic values. Th e arts and culture sector was an important tool for disseminating the native spirit and awakening the regions’ spiritual life. Taking into account the fact that artistic value of the most works published during that period had decreased over time, their review played an important role in increasing readers’ interest. Periodicals edited in Romanian language were oriented towards national consciousness education, therefore a special attention was placed on Romanian literature and folklore. Some interpreters claimed that Bessarabian periodicals during 1918-1940 had a regional character. Modest popularization of national and international artistic works was determined by time prerogatives, the need to promote local talents, to study local culture and to incorporate into the national culture. Russian periodicals played an essential role in disseminating values and culture of ethnic minorities, which activity proved to be fruitful during 1918-1940. Few periodicals showed conside rable interest in national culture, namely those under the auspices of statesmen or Romanian native editors. During the Russian interwar period, the works dedicated to culture were concise, oft en using pseudonyms, or not using the author’s name at all. Th is fact proved that art criticism was at an early stage of development.
