Background. It is considered that hyperglycemia is an important risk factor for mortality in patients with COVID-19 suffering from diabetes and as well as those without diabetes. Hyperglycemia during period of hospitalization appears to have more unfavorable prognosis for patients without diabetes than for those with diabetes. Objective of the study. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the association between hyperglycemia during the time of hospitalization and the evolution of COVID-19. Material and Methods. A group of 1791 patients with severe forms of COVID-19 were analyzed. The mean age of the group was 57.72 ± 12.34 years, the mean BMI of 30.54 ± 5.51 kg/m2, the average level of fasting blood glucose was 8.66 ± 4.45 mmol/l withal the average value of HbA1c was 7.2 ± 1.94%. Results. At admission hyperglycemia more frequently was detected in men (p <0.05) at the older age (p <0.001) and with a higher BMI (p <0.001) compared to those with normal blood glucose levels. The duration of hospitalization of persons with hyperglycemia was 17.37 ± 5.84 days, being statistically significant in comparison with patients with normal blood glucose values - 14.62 ± 5.85 days (p <0.001). The mortality rate among patients with hyperglycemia was 66%, every third person who died was previously known with diabetes. Conclusion. Hyperglycemia during hospitalization period in patients with COVID-19 resulted in a longer hospital stay as well as in a higher mortality rate. |
