The main objective of this paper is to make a brief analysis of the populism
as a political ideology. This article argues that populism was a constant
feature of many academic definitions widely varying. The term is often
engaged in loose, inconsistent and undefined ways to denote appeals to
„the people”, „demagogy” and „catch-all” politics. In the article one tries
to establish the relation between populism and democracy. The current
democracy has both redemptive and pragmatic faces and when a gap
forms, that is too great, between democracy’s two faces, populism is likely
to emerge. It is important, in political sciences, to investigate the possibil-
ity of a distinctive political ideology that might be called „populist”. Thus
the article presents a synthesis of some opinions on the topic.
