Background. Recent studies have shown that transient epileptic amnesia (TEA) is a rare clinical manifestation of temporal lobe epilepsy and can be easily interpreted as episodes of global transient amnesia or psychogenic amnesia, which are often the reason for delaying appropriate treatment. Objective of the study. To evaluate the clinical aspects, neuroimaging, EEG and neuropsychological profile regarding TEA patients. Material and Methods. A case study of two patients diagnosed with TEA based on clinical and neurophysiological criteria. Patients were clinically evaluated, monitored with EEG in sleep and in wakefulness for 120-180 minutes, and neuropsychological assessed with: MoCA test, Luria verbal memory test and REY complex figure. Also, we have been studied the most recent publications and 40 clinical cases. Results. The reported cases have an early onset, which makes diagnosis even more difficult. The seizures were short and manifested by the impossibility of remembering the family members names and very rare were associated with ictal motor elements. Interictal epileptiform discharges were found mainly in sleep, in the left temporal cortical areas. Even though episodic memory was preserved, the patients manifested persistent disorders in short-term and autobiographical memory. Patients responded well to antiepileptic treatment. Conclusion. TEA represents a clinical entity, a component part of the temporal lobe epilepsy. Unfortunately, this syndrome is often tangled with other pathologies that imitate TEA. Deepening knowledge in seizure semiology and long time EEG will increase early detection and provide a better quality of life. |
