Background. Pre-surgical psychological assessment in epilepsy is important for assessing and predicting the risk of potential postsurgical cognitive deficits and memory decline, and also for determining the dominant hemisphere for language function. Objective of the study. To assess the strengths and weaknesses in the presurgical and post-surgical cognitive domain, to compare the results and to evaluate the degree of improvement or worsening in the post-surgical cognitive domain. Material and Methods. One patient was evaluated, a child, 11 years old, left-handed. The study took place at National Center for Epileptology during 2019-2020. We applied 6 pre-surgical and post-surgical tests: The Raven's Progressive Matrices Test; Rey Osterriech auditory-verbal memory test; Visual memory test, REY complex figure; verbal fluency, COWAT Test, the Cube and the Clock Test. Results. The psychological assessment emphasized a post-surgical improvement of cognitive abilities, with a increase of nonverbal intelligence and verbal memory, a slight decline in the language and visual memory domains associated with difficulties in drawing the cube and the clock. Conclusion. The post-surgical result provided seizures free after surgery, an improvement in the cognitive, behavioral, family domains and a better quality of life. |
