Background. We all know the notion of anesthesia which means "no sensation", but synesthesia translates as "a reunion of several senses". For someone, the text you are reading now is not seen in black and white, but is heard, tasted or felt (Cytowic, 2018). Objective of the study. To form a clear image on the phenomenon of synesthesia, to explain the mechanism of appearance and to present its neurological importance, deduced from the review of the profile literature. Material and Methods. The study of the specialized literature, of about 75 articles, of the scientific sources, of the books published on this subject. Information from the platforms www.medscape.com, www.pubmed.gov, www.synesthesia.com, videos, speeches by doctors and people with synesthesia was used. The following methods were used in this synthesis of the literature: description and synthesis. Results. Synesthesia is a neurological phenomenon in which the stimulation of a sensory /cognitive pathway leads to automatic experiences in other sensory /cognitive pathways (Cytowic, 2002). Luria, in his book "The Mind of a Mnemonist" (1994) describes the case of a man with an absolute memory induced by synesthesia. Hornik, in 2001, describes a patient who saw the pain in color: "It was like I was wearing orange glasses." Bors, in 1979, observed synesthesia in patients with spinal cord injury in whom painful stimulation of the affected region causes pain in the healthy part. Drug-induced synesthesia, thalamic lesions, and temporal lobe epilepsy have also been described. Conclusion. The study of synesthesia began in the 19th century, but was abandoned due to a poor knowledge of the CNS. At present, neuroscience is fast approaching the elucidation of the mechanism of this enigmatic phenomenon. |
