Background. Infant mortality rate defined as the number of deaths under one year per 1000 live births is a key indicator for a country’s health and standard of living. In India, the number of infant deaths constitutes one fifth of the global infant deaths. Objective of the study. To analyze the evolution of infant mortality in India at the national level, its risk factors, as well as the health care policies aimed at infant mortality reduction. Material and Methods. A systematic review of scientific articles and major health care programmes issued between 2007 to 2017 through various biomedical research platforms. Results. Even though the infant mortality has reduced from 49 in 2007 to 39.4 in 2017, its burden still remains high. The risk factors include preterm birth, neonatal infections, complications during birth and congenital malformations. Socio-economic and cultural factors also contribute to the high infant mortality rate in India, especially in rural areas. The Government of India has launched the National Rural Health Mission to improve the health care accessibility to the rural areas where infant mortality rates are very high. Conclusion. Efforts have been taken up by the Government to reduce the infant mortality to 23 per 1000 live births by 2025. The major challenges include the poor health care accessibility in the rural areas, poor economic background, lack of knowledge about the healthy maternal and neonatal health practices. |
