Romanele lui D. Bolintineanu, Manoil şi Elena reprezintă realizări de valoare pentru evoluţia acestui gen în literatura românească. Autorul pune în evidenţă două categorii de femei – „femeia-înger” şi „femeia-demon”, cea care poate face din bărbat un ideal, îl poate înălţa, înnobila, şi cea îl aduce pe bărbat la starea cea mai deplorabilă. Autorul excelează în descrieri portretistice, în conturarea personajelor, a destinelor acestora. Evoluţia personajelor se realizează prin sondarea în psihologia acestora, în conştiinţa lor, în raporturile acestora cu alte personaje, în realităţile vieţii cu care se confruntă. Ideea de bază a articolului este de a pune în evidenţă faptul că D. Bolintineanu a reuşit să demonstreze că „o femeie poate face dintr-un om sau un înger sau un demon, orice vei voi”. Romanul oglindeşte veridic, dincolo de text, în spiritul ideilor înaintate ale epocii, o seamă de aspecte importante din acea vreme, legate de societate şi de familie.

Bolintineanu’s novels Manoil and Elena are valuable achievements for the evolution of this genre in Romanian literature. The author foregrounds two categories of women – “the woman-angel” and “the woman-demon”, the one who can make her man an ideal, by ennobling him, and the one that leads her man to the most miserable state. The author excels in detailed descriptions, in the sketching of the characters and of their destinies. The evolution of the characters is accomplished through the sounding in their psychology and consciousness, in their relationships with other characters, in the realities of life that they face. The main idea of the article is to highlight the fact that D. Bolintineanu managed to prove that “a woman can make a man an angel or a demon, whatever you want”. The novel truthfully mirrors, beyond the text, in the spirit of the advanced ideas of the epoch, a number of important aspects related to the society and family of the time.
