Rezumat

Some of the adolescents whose parents work abroad face with problems in school functioning. Because family support and monitoring by parents are not continuously provided, adolescents may face the risk of developing negative attitudes toward school, including deviant behaviors. The current study aims to investigate the relationship between the migration of parents to work abroad, respectively general attitude toward school and deviant behaviors among adolescents. Participants were 79 Romanian adolescents (49 boys and 30 girls), of which 41 had at least one parent left abroad. Participants completed three standardized questionnaires. There was no significant difference between boys and girls in terms of overall attitude toward school. In contrast, adolescents with parents working abroad obtained a significantly higher mean score on the measure of frequency of undisciplined behaviors during school program. Moreover, both for adolescents with parents left abroad and for those from intact families, the negative attitude toward school was associated with a higher frequency of undisciplined behaviors. This association was more consistent for adolescents whose parents worked abroad. Results are discussed by considering the contexts created through parents’ migration, as well as preventive measures that can be adopted to maintain the interest for school among adolescents.
