Rezumat

A sexual response presupposes a complex interaction among physiology, emotions, experiences, beliefs, lifestyle, and relationship style. Disruption of any of these components can affect sexual desire, arousal, or satisfaction, and treatment often implies the application of more than one approach. With sexual activity being primarily a physical activity, any discomfort that is physical by nature affects it. The most common type of sexual disorder in men is erectile dysfunction, and in women – low sexual desire, problems in getting aroused, or difficulties in reaching orgasm. Sexual disorders could be caused by more factors of either physical or psychological origin. Psychological and social factors such as depression, anxiety, and other untreated mental disorders can trigger sexual dysfunction in one of the partners. Cognitive-behavioral therapy can lead to beneficial outcomes in couples with sexual dysfunction. The key to this approach is that both partners will be required to display certain behaviors in the form of homework. Within the framework of a cognitive-behavioral therapeutic approach, the psychotherapist will aim to identify the blockages of intrapsychic and interpersonal nature that contribute to the dysfunction. Once identified, these blockages can be overcome with practical therapeutic approaches. The therapist will support the couple to identify maladaptive behavioral patterns and manage the process of conflict resolution.
