Genurile epice şi elementele dramatice (comedia dell’ arte) sunt introduse de E.T.A. Hoffmann în textul de bază al naraţiunii. Datorită acestui procedeu, opera literară primeşte un caracter inovator. Multitudinea intercalărilor genurilor, cum ar fi povestea şi mitul, biografia şi autobiografia, realul şi irealul, permit scriitorului să creeze caractere complexe, care sunt în căutarea perfecţiunii sufleteşti şi recunoaşterea de sine.

The dramatic elements (comedia dell’ arte) and different epic genres were introduced by E.T.A. Hoffmann into the main narrative text. This method has considerably enriched the artistic possibilities of the writer. The author uses a large variety of combinations: the fairy tale and myth, biography und autobiography, reality and irreality, which permit the German representative of late Romanticism to create complex characters, which are on the way to self-consciousness and self-perfection.
