Being a part of the All-European heritage, the historic and architectural heritage of Odessa and the Crimea was formed under a considerable influence of many European architectural schools. Traditionally they mention only Italian, French and sometimes Dutch influence. As for the British influence, for many it is a “Terra incognita”. A number of monuments of architecture, architectural ensembles and structures were created under the influence of the British architecture. One of the first who observed the English influence in architecture and the interior in the Palace of Count M. S. Vorontsov in Odessa was Professor Nikolai Murzakevich (1806-1883). This problem was also touched upon by such scientists as the art historian and restorer from the Crimea (Alupka) Leonid Timofeev and Professor, an architectural historian, Andrey Punin (St. Petersburg). However, till the present time no comprehensive scientific work was published on the subject chosen by us. Britain and the Northern coast are quite far away from the Black Sea. What could there be in common between the “Misty Albion” on one side, and the “Sunny Tavrida” and all the Northern coast of the Black Sea on the other? Yet, let us recollect that the British national poet George Gordon Byron in his poem “Don Juan” depicted the capture of Ismail fortress. He featured Suvorov, de Ribas, Langeron and Potemkin as heroes. Count Vorontsov’s Palace in Odessa is an interesting unit for studying the above process. Apart from its architectural and historical value it is an object of heritage, as it is linked with the name of the person of European range and European fame. Having expanded our range of research in time, we can view the Odessa Vorontsov’s Palace at a different angle. There comes an understanding that it is, if one can put it that way, kind of go-between link of the classicism epoch domination and the architecture of distinctly romantic trend, within which the later eclecticism was conceived.
