Rezumat

Somewhat unexpected for today’s reader, Cantemir frequently returns in Sacro-sanctae Scientiae Indepingibilis Imago to the motif of self-knowledge. More precisely, of good self-understanding. Since he aims to clarify some not quite ordinary matters (such as: the “way of true knowledge”; the divine creation and the way of the created; the problem of time and eternity; the meaning of life and the fate of man), he seeks above all to review his own inner condition. He does it in the guise of a narrator who confesses at length, sometimes with dramatic accents. As he finds out for himself, self-understanding takes place with difficulty, through the challenging passage of some steps. Moreover, it involves passing through a critical moment (discrimen), when the human mind is disturbed in the face of something overpowering and feels an overwhelming self-doubt. He then sees himself far from “the living face of the truth”, as if in a terrible exile. It also presupposes a good guide: a friend sensitive to one’s self-doubts and to the path sought, someone who has followed a certain way of knowledge, or, ultimately, the very One who is “the way, the truth, and the life”.
