Any teacher needs to know the form of the language, the meaning in the context, and the phonological aspects of the language, to come up with the most appropriate way for students to practice using them. When the teacher plans to teach a grammar or vocabulary item or a functional exponent, it is essential that he plans for students to be able to understand and use it properly. For these reasons, it is crucial for the teacher to analyse the language he/she is going to teach. It is important to consider three aspects: meaning, form, and pronunciation/phonology. Covering all aspects of the target language, by preparing a detailed language analysis, and dealing with them in turn, we are less likely to fail in these important areas, and in checking understanding; and students are more likely to retain what we teach and can use it when they need to, therefore, ensuring that we have done our best to meet their cognitive demands. |
