Rezumat

Olha Bachynska was one of the leaders of the Ukrainian feminist movement in Western Ukraine in the early XX century. For a long time, she was a directorate member of the «Regional Union of Economic and Dairy» (since 1924) – one of the leading manufacturer of butter and dairy products in the Lviv region in the 30s of the ХХ century. She was also known for her public and charitable activities. Her collection of traditional Western Ukrai-nian embroidery is of great importance for the preservation and study of Ukrainian art. The collection in 1915 in Gműnd (Austria) in the Ukrainian refugee encampment was formed. Olha Bachynska involved about 300 women who were in the en-campment at the time. She provided them materials (fabric and threads) and asked them to embroider the most characteristic of the area from which they came, ornaments in a small format (about 10×12 cm). At the end of 1915, 400 samples were made. The collector presented them at the Exhibition of Immigrants in Vienna in December of the same year. Combined according to the territorial principle in the table, they represented traditional embroi-dery of Lemko Region (Peremyshl), Pokuttia (Horodenka, Sniatyn, Kolo-myia), Hutsul Region (Kosiv), Pidhiria (Zhydachiv, Kalysh), Boiko Region (Turka), Opillia (Horodok, Zolochiv, Bibrka, Berezhany), Vilyn (Sokal, Radekhiv), Western Podillia (Zboriv, Buchach), etc. At the same time, the samples presented at the exhibition kept in the Austrian Museum of Folk Life and Folk Art (Volkskunde Museum) in Vienna. In March 1926, O. Bachynska passed part of her collection to the-National Museum in Lviv. In 2001, the Memorial Museum of Olha Ba-chynska was established in Stryi (Lviv region), where she lived for a long time. More than 50 embroidered samples from her Gműnd collection are stored there today. Furthermore, the collector`s relative recently donated a significant number of samples to the Museum of Ethnography and Applied Art of the Ethnology Institution of NAS of Ukraine. Thus, today Olha Ba-chynska's collection is stored in 4 museums, 3 of which are Ukrainian. Olga Bachynska's collection is important for the study of Ukrainian traditional embroidery, because presented in it samples provide rich materi-al for comparison, analogies and to determine embroidery artistic features in Western Ukraine`s ethnographic regions in general and their individual centers. There were some stitches in the samples which no longer were used in the early XX century (stitch named «navichka», which came from Opillia Region, for example). According to notes in the tables, craftswomen called them «davni» (literally «ancient»). Accurate dating of the collection is im-portant for the chronology of the appearance or disappearance of Ukrainian traditional embroidery stitches, motifs and ornaments, both of local origin or borrowed from printed tables.
