Rezumat | ||||||
The most famous representative of the extinct deers is the Megaloceros giganteus. Its „celebrity” status was imposed by the size of the antlers (considered to be the largest in the Cervidae family (antler span - 3.5 m), the body size close to that of the current elk (height at withers - 1.8 m) and most notably, due to the almost perfectly preserved fossils from Ireland. Located on the Scythian Platform, the localities of Vaslui County yielded fossils remain of the Late Pleistocene giant deer (Megaloceros giganteus). Such fossil remains were unearthed from several localities: Zorleni, Bârlad Sud, Fălciu, and Hulubăț. Ensuring systematic surveys of some of these localities carried out over time offered the possibility to recover other fossil vertebrates such as mammoths, woolly rhinoceros, and steppe bison. The presence of the Megaloceros giganteus in the deposits of the Pleistocene from Romania is rather a common occurrence; but in the time frame dominated by other big coeval herbivores, the overall presence of this genre is far scarcer.The overall majority of giant deer fossil remains come from fluvial sand and/or gravel channel fills.
