Rezumat

The Reformation in the 16th century not only divided Europe, but also built new bridges among countries. The example of such interaction – relations between the Grand Duchy of Lithuania (further referred to as GDL, Lithuania) and Moldova in 6-7 decades. The movement of Reformation in Lithuania had great impact to the formation of Protestant faith of the future Prince of Moldova (reigned 1561-1563) Iacob Heraclid (1527-1563) also known as Despot Voda. He visited the GDL in 1557 and had the opportunity to get to know the evangelical environment, to meet and to discuss, among others, with the earliest Protestant preachers. The first generation of evangelical Pastors (Ministers) as a social and professional group during the reign of Sigismund August, is analyzed in this presentation. Paradoxically, but in the broad historiography, the evangelical clergy of GDL, as a professional and social group, did not receive a comprehensive study. Only the biographies of individual ministers have been published. One of the biggest problem connected with this topic is the lack of historical sources. Knowledge about Protestants during the Reformation of the GDL was in general very poor and unsystematic. Most importantly, however, all the archive of the Synod of the Evangelical Reformed Church burned during the religious tumult in 1611. The emergence of Evangelical pastors in the countries that were affected by the movement of Reformation brought big challenges. Instead of a Catholic priest distinguished by his sacerdotal status and viewed as a point of contact between the sacred and the profane, the Protestant pastor emerged – no longer a participant of the divine essence, but rather of faith and forgiveness. The necessity to define the functions of a new clergy appeared. The social and confessional discrepancies within the new group appeared in different countries. Firstly in the GDL, arose the problem of confessional dependence of evangelical clergy. Reformation here during the earliest period was not theologically homogeneous, but rather liberal from the confessional point of view. The reformation in Lithuania did not receive the support of the rulers and did not establish itself as a state’s confessional system. The movement was led by private individuals (from nobles to rich citizens), all their experiences with Reformation ideas were different. Because of that, the search for the doctrine of the evangelical faith lasted until the 8th decade. Only starting then there has been a clearer distinction between the Evangelical Reformed clergy. Therefore in this research the list of earliest evangelical priests was drawn up from people, who acted in 1553-1572 and who were named as evangelical preachers (“minister”, “pastor”, “Minister Verbi Divini“ or “Minister Verbum Dei” by contemporaries. The list includes all evangelical pastors who participated in the creation of the Evangelical Church in Lithuania (named “Unitas Lithuaniae”) and even those, who later (from the beginning of the 7th decade), chose the path of radical reformers. In total, the data of 34 pastors are available. Some aspects of their collective social biography was analyzed: social and regional origin, professional activity before they became protestant ministers, their education and marital status. The geographical origin of the 25 preachers is more or less clear. Most of them, 16, came from the GDL. As many as nine of them were from Podlasie. The unclear case of origin of Simon Budnas (from Masuria (Poland) or from the GDL). Eight evangelicals came from Poland, including three from places near the territory of the GDL (Krovicki and Diskordia from Masuria, Sudrovius from Mazovia (Ostrolenko)). The social origin of the 10 preachers is known: five were from petty nobility, four – from townspeople, and one from peasants. Seven ministers from all this group were ex-Catholic priests and two – ex-monks. At least eight preachers studied at universities: six – at the Krakow Academy, three of them continued their studies in Lepicig, Padua and Wittenberg; two matriculated in the University of Karaliaučius. It is well known that eight evangelical pastors were married. It seems that Stanislaw Sudrovius was married even twice. Almost all of them had children.
