Background. Perinatal transmission of HBV and HCV is the most common way of infecting children born to their chronically infected mothers. Objective of the study. determining the risk of perinatal HBV and HCV infection in children born to their chronically infected mothers. Material and Methods. HBV and HCV serological markers were determined in 100 pregnant women registered with the family doctor. HBsAg-positive or anti-HCV-positive cases were tested for HBV DNA or HCV RNA. Children born to their infected mothers were examined for HBV and HCV markers, with determination of viremia in the first 3-4 months, with monitoring for 24 months. Results. 35 pregnant women were found positive for:HBsAg (29) and anti-HCV (6), and at 8 and 2 respectively the presence of viremia. In the first 3-4 months of life, 13 children were confirmed perinatal HBV (8 with viremia) and 6 - perinatal HCV (2 with HCV viremia). Hepatomegaly, cytolysis was determined in all children, being monitored and treated symptomatically for 24 months. Conclusion. Pregnant women chronically infected with HBV or HCV have a higher risk of perinatal transmission of infection to their newborns in the first months after birth. Prevention of perinatal transmission of HBV can be achieved by antiviral treatment of pregnant women in the last trimester of pregnancy. |
