Background. Age-related cataract (ARC) is the most common disease in ophthalmology, which, if left untreated, can progress to blindness. Objective of the study. The purpose of this study was to determine the affected quadrants of the lens in the incipient age-related cataract (cortical type). Material and Methods. A total of 646 patients with mature ARC (or intumescent cataract) in one eye and incipient cataract in the other eye were enrolled in the study. Cortical cataract was detected in 450 patients (70%) with incipient cataract, nuclear cataract - in 130 patients (20%), and cupuliform cataract – in 66 patients (10%). Results. In the inferotemporal and superotemporal quadrants anterior cortical cataract was detected in 11% and 7% of patients, supranuclear cataract - in 7% and 4% of patients, cortical posterior cataract – in 4% and 2% of patients, equatorial cortical cataract - in 2% and 1% of patients. In the inferonasal and superonasal quadrants anterior cortical cataract was detected in 25% and 3% of patients, supranuclear cataract - in 15% and 2% of patients, cortical posterior cataract - in 10% and 1% of patients, equatorial cortical cataract - in 5% and 1% of patients. Conclusion. Our results demonstrated that inferonasal and inferotemporal quadrants were the most affected in patients with incipient age-related cataract |
