The paper is devoted to the investigation of symbol as an expressive method in modern theatre performances. It takes into account previous studies in this field: metaphysical theatre by A.Artaud, the interpretation of symbol in theories by J.Lotman, S.Averintsev and in psychology of C.G.Jung, sign structure and concept of mythos by R.Barthes, theatre semiotics investigations of P.Pavis and A.Ubersfeld. Author analyses the process of evolution of the symbol in contemporary theatre from itstraditional aspect to conventional (the new one),which has developed as an independent phenomenon with its own unique structure including a symbolical action. Conventional symbols reveal and carry symbolical meaning within the framework of performance. They draw the meaning of the theatrical action towards the metaphysical, forming a symbolic image (metasymbol).
