Background. Even though cervical pain is not related to a severe cause in the majority of the cases, from a long-term perspective a variety of clinical forms associated with cervical conditions can result in chronic pain, disability and functional limitations. Objective of the study. Was to investigate the interactions between different factors that can determine disability in persons with cervical pain. Material and Methods. A number of 42 patients were assessed using a special designed questionnaire which included Visual Analogue Scale (VAS), Neck Disability Index (NDI), PHQ -9 (Patient Health Questionnaire -9), HADS (Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale) and other clinical parameters. Results. The main clinical form of cervical pain registered in was cervical pain with irradiation into hand in 52%, localized pain in 34% and radicular pain in 14 %. At the same time the patients with cervical pain that irradiates into hand are more vulnerable population as the mean scores of VAS (mean 5±1.0), PHQ-9 (mean 8±4) and NDI (21±15) were higher in the respective group. Other findings showed that pain intensity and disability is more common in women, patients with other articular pain sites, and in those with no previous trauma. Pearson correlation test showed significant relationship within depression/anxiety score, VAS intensity and NDI. Conclusion. Patients with higher intensity of pain, raised levels of anxiety and depression, with no previous trauma and with other joint pain represent a vulnerable group for disability within cervical pain. Multifactorial relations of pain and disability should be considered in patient with cervical conditions. |
