Background. Bipolar affective disorder (BAD) causes family problems, economic instability, accidental injuries, and suicidal risk, while at the same time associating with an increased predisposition to develop alcohol dependence. Objective of the study. To study on the basis of literature data and clinical observations of their own Comorbidity BAD / Alcohol dependence. Material and Methods. The study included 40 patients with BAD, hospitalized in SCP, in period of 2010 - 2020. Patient’s average age - 51.85 years. Patients were divided into two groups: study group - 14 patients with BAD and alcohol dependence; control group - 26 patients with BAD without alcohol dependence. Results. The current study has shown that 35% of BAD patients also abused alcohol. The average age of onset at patients without comorbid dependence of alcohol is 7.5 years lower. Patients from study group needed hospitalization 2.45 times more frequently; had multiple mixed episodes as well as with psychotic symptoms. Therapeutic compliance is statistically (p<0,05) higher at patients without alcohol dependence. Conclusion. 1) BAD onset at alcohol consumers was at younger age; 2) Alcohol withdrawal aggravated BAD symptoms, BAD led to alcohol consumption; 3) alcohol dependence reduced adherence to treatment, led to increased rate of hospitalizations and appearance of mixed episodes, including with psychotic symptoms. |
