The article presents the epidemiological and evolutional data concerning the spread of HIV in the Republic of Moldova (RM) in the context of the global HIV epidemic. The study presents the results of the epidemiological analyses of the 3,459 persons infected with HIV registered in the RM between 1987 and 2006. Statistics showed that the incidence of HIV infection increased continuously during this period, infecting 14.77 per 100,000 of the population in 1987 and 80.79 in 2006. The epidemic is found preponderantly among the urban population (85.9%), young people, 20-39 years old (81.82%), and males (66.18%). The transmission of HIV occurs most often through intravenous drug use (61.60%). The article notes other characteristics of the epidemic: the significant spread of the infection in rural areas, affecting all age categories; the increase of morbidity among native citizens, including females; the decrease in the rate of transmission of HIV during drug use; the increase of contamination through sexual activity; and perinatal increase among women and new-born children and the persons with AIDS. |
