Rezumat

Aristide Dovatúr (November 5, 1897, Reni – march 17, 1982, Leningrad), a native of the southern Bassarabia, a classical philologist, PhD in history, professor graduated from the Faculty of History and Philology of the University of Saratov, worked at universities of Saratov and Leningrad. Since the early years, the foundations of strong humanist knowledge have been laid. Being familiar with languages from childhood - French, Romanian, Russian and Greek - he studied Polish, German and Latin at the Warsaw Gymnasium. Being a specialist of classical languages, Aristide Dovatúr spoke also coherently Italian, Spanish and Portuguese. His mentor's work was emphasized by a careful and protective attitude to recruits from the first year of studies, but he was a demanding and persevering mentor of the student's academic activity from the senior years of studies and the investigations of the postgraduate studies. His classical languages translator's work begins in the 20's of the last century - the collective translation of the novel Leucippe and Clitophon by Achilles from Alexandria (1925) and Heliodor's Aethiopica (1932) were carried out in the ABDEM scientific community (the initials of the members of this circle of translators). This abbreviation has served as a right to repress scholars. Dovatúr olso suffered. In 1935 he was exiled to Saratov and in 1937 hi was incriminated the standard accusation during those times of counterrevolutionary propaganda, he was sentenced to 10 years of hard labor in one of the detention camps. Even in the period ofhostility the scientist doesn’t stop perfecting his formative abilities. He becomes a doctor of sciences only after his being eliberated from the prison. Dovatúr's subject of scientific studies was antiquity, but not on the basis of elementary materialist, but on that antiquity that found its manifestation on the basis of supreme spirituality, fixed in the works of the ancient authors themselves. Alongside with his predecessors, Dovatúr was a founder and faithful follower of the Sankt-Petersburg Historical and Philological School. But he did not mechanically continue his predecessors’ doctrine. His conception is distinguished by a special desire of penetration into the spiritual world of the ancient scientists. At the core of his investigative activity there was a thorough study of the ancient literary tradition in order to penetrate into the way of thinking of ancient writers and to make a connection with the intimacy of ancient civilization.
